The Base Chapel 1955 to Today

Bakalar Air Force Base Chapel in 1955 Building #T48 when still under Air Force control and used by Airmen.

This is the 1955 inventory listing from the master list of all Bakalar Air Force Base facilities completed in 1955. The Chapel photos featured above are from the 1955 inventory.

In this chapel photograph, note the canopy and speakers on the steeple. This is the only photograph the museum has of the chapel with the canopy. 

 

 

1991 photos of the base chapel when under civilian use prior to the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum involvement with the restoration project. Note the military buildings surrounding the chapel which have been torn down in recent years.

This photograph is of Lt. Colonel Howard N. Frederick, 434th Wing Chaplain and Brigadier General John Hoff, April 17, 1966 as Lt. Colonel Frederick was awarded a Certificate of Special Merit at Bakalar Air Force Base upon his retirement. Lt. Colonel Frederick was with the 434th Troop Carrier Wing since 1953. He was a Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and recalled to duty during the Korean Conflict.

Chaplain Frederick served as Chaplain of the Atterbury Air Base during the early 1950's and as acting Chaplain of the 10th Air Force with headquarters at Selfridge Field, Michigan.

Chaplain Frederick donated his Chaplain's Field Kit to the museum. This will have a special display case built to hold this unique and rare item. Note this kit has both the Army Air Force and Air Force scarf.

 

 

 

The original Chapel bell was returned and installed at the Chapel. A special Chapel bell dedication program was held December 7, 2001. Chaplain Frederick requested that his deceased wife and daughter be remembered in a Memorial at the Chapel. A memorial has been placed at the Chapel.

Wife: Mary Zartman Frederick January 11, 1911-June 9, 2001

Daughter: Janice Frederick Scheffler November 18, 1940-April 28, 2001

Both of these women assisted and served with him in his Ministry, and Chaplain Service to the former air base.

Page 13, Religious Activities

Religious Services are conducted in Base Chapel, building 48, by the assigned protestant chaplain and the civilian auxiliary Catholic chaplain. There are no services available for personnel of the Jewish faith. The nearest synagogue is in Indianapolis, 45 miles north of Bakalar. The following is the schedule for Chapel Services:

Protestant: Sunday: 1000 Hours-Sunday School, 1100 Hours-Morning Worship Service, Wednesday 1830 Hours-Chapel Choir Rehearsal, Friday 1530 Hours-Children's Choir Rehearsal.

Catholic: Sundays

In Addition, a morning worship service is held at 0730 hours each second Sunday in the month for the benefit of the 434th Troop Carrier Wing.
